Mikarose: Reinventing Modesty {Giveaway}

Are you ready for another great giveaway?

Today I would like to introduce you to Mikarose.

Mikarose is a clothing company that specializes in modest, elegant and fashionable dresses. The company's idea evolved when the owners realized how difficult it was to find modest dresses in today's market. We are sure you have had similar experiences when looking for a modest dress. After many frustrating outings, Mikarose was formed. Their goal is to provide an extensive line of modest dresses, without having to sacrifice style. You will be able to wear their line to a broad range of functions: from everyday events to corporate parties. Mikarose hopes to not only meet the needs of women looking for modest wear, but all those who are seeking elegant dresses.

Here are a few of my favorites.
I would love to own this dress, but my biggest problem is which color!?!? It comes in Pink & Hunter Green.
Such a great dress!
This is definitely going on my wishlist.

When I was picking out my favorites I saw the Alexia and instantly fell in love. This dress is so cute, fun & flirty. The Alexia is totally my style.

When I saw the Victoria Spring Dress I once again....fell in love with it. It looks so chic and I’m loving the little ruffle detail on the dress.

My review of Mikarose:
Mikarose was kind enough to send me my very own Mikarose dress to try out. I had to pick out my 4 favorites, which was so hard, but I finally did it.
I received the Riley Dress in white.
I LOVE this dress!
I LOVE my new Riley dress. I seriously want to wear it every Sunday. :) I copied the picture and wore mine with a cute black belt. It came with a white belt attached, but the black just adds that pop of color that I love!

You know those dresses that just make you feel so good about yourself, so cute, so beautiful?
Well, my dress from Mikarose is definitely one of those dresses.
Not only is the Riley a beautiful dress, it’s also very comfortable. I actually wore it all day Sunday (even after we got home from Church) and felt great in it. I loved the length of the dress (just below my knees) and it fit perfect!
Oh...and it has pockets! Maybe I'm weird, but I love dresses with pockets. I think it adds something to the dress and makes them so cute.

I am seeing many more Mikarose dresses in my future. A couple of them are out of stock in my size, but I am patiently waiting. :)

O.K., so have I got you all excited about Mikarose? I hope so because I know you will love their clothing as much as I do.

Up for Grabs:
Mikarose is offering one (1) lucky Little LDS Ideas reader (in the U.S. or Canada) a $50 gift certificate to Mikarose.

We are blessed when we keep the commandments: 1st Week Sharing Time Idea for September 2012

IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE (seeing an object lesson): Invite a mother to bring her baby to sharing time.  Invite the children to share some rules that would help keep the baby safe.  Tell the children that we are all Heavenly Father's children; He loves us and gives us rules or commandments that will keep us safe and happy.  Show a picture of Moses and the Ten Commandments (found on this page), and briefly tell the children how Moses received the commandments (see Exodus 19-20).

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (singing songs): Put the following three phrases on the board: "Respect and Worship God," "Honor Parents," and "Respect Others."  Tell the children that the Ten Commandments can be separated into these three categories.  Divide the children into groups and give them each a song that relates to one of the categories.  Ask each group to decide who will sing the song (for example, boys only, girls only, or those wearing red).  After the song is sung, ask a child to post the song under the proper category.  Consider using the following songs: "Saturday" (CS, 196), "Quickly I'll Obey" (CS, 197), "My Dad" (CS, 211), "The Church of Jesus Christ" (CS, 77), and "Kindness Begins with Me" (CS, 145).

ENCOURAGE APPLICATION (singing a song): Sing "Keep the Commandments" (CS, 146-47), and ask the children to listen for the promises we receive when we keep the commandments.  Invite them to share how they are blessed when they keep the commandments.

Next click on ‘Sharing Time Ideas’

You will now see my Sharing Time Ideas page. I have them separated by month and then week. If you are looking for a specific week, just click on it, and you will be taken to my Sharing Time Idea for that week.
Yeah!
I have added links for the entire year. I will continue to add links for each month/week as I add my ideas.
When we get to next year I will begin adding next year's Months and weekly themes.

20 Ways to Unplug from TV: From LDS Living

{Day 14} of our 40 Day Media Fast, and so far so good. I’ve had to break the ‘No Internet’ rule a couple of times, but other than that it’s going great.

I have been reading the Ensign (all from this year) and studying the scriptures. I am surprised how many times I have read about media. It may not be a whole article devoted to the dangers of media, but little snippets here and there. It's been wonderful and has really opened my eyes.

Then in the Relief Society lesson yesterday we read how President Smith believed that advances in technology “can indeed become the blessings if we utilize them in righteousness for the dissemination of truth and furthermore of the work of the Lord among men.”
He then said this, “The great challenge facing the world today lies in the use we make of many of these inventions. We can use them to destroy, as we have sometimes done in the past, or we can utilize them to enlighten and bless mankind, as our Heavenly Father would have us do.”
(Teachings of Presidents of The Church: George Albert Smith)

Another great excerpt I read from my “Book Of Mormon Verse by Verse” says this about 2 Nephi 15:20.
“The purpose of this earth life is to learn to distinguish between good and evil. Some people are working hard at blurring our view of what is right and what is wrong. There are moral absolutes...So much of what we call enlightenment is really the opposite—darkness. Much of our sophistication is really degradation.
On a very personal level, this verse is a stark warning. God knows what we know (or are watching, listening to or looking at). He knows what is in our hearts, our intentions. Baptized members of the Church cannot rationalize wrong behavior on the ground of ignorance or political correctness. President Spencer W. Kimball said, ‘I challenge any normal baptized person who says he did not know he was doing wrong.’”

Makes you think twice about what your favorite TV shows are, huh?

So today I’m going to help you out a little bit, well actually LDS Living is. When you first saw my 40 day Media Fast did you think that was the craziest thing you ever saw?
Actually I had a lot of positive feedback, thanks!!

Well, if you or your family is having some problems turning off that T.V. here’s a little help from yet another LDS Living article.

First let’s share their statistics.
The television is on for 6 hours and 47 minutes each day in the average American home, adding up to 250 billion hours of TV watched by Americans annually. That’s a lot!
Even infants and toddlers—up to two-thirds of them—spend two hours a day watching TV. And all that television watching can lead to some negative effects. With such an early start, most children will have seen 200,000 violent acts on television by age 18 and viewed 40,000 commercials per year.
(From LDS Living magazine)

The article then shared a few stories from people. Here is one of the stories.
”Brittany Nelson, a mother of four in Gilbert, Arizona, reflects on her family’s experience with television when she was a teenager. When her family was making a move to Hawaii, her father and brother went there to find a place to live. Their apartment had no television, and when the family arrived, their experience was a catalyst for deciding to try living without TV.
‘It was hard. My younger sister . . . and I would walk up to BYU-Hawaii, and use one of their television sets to watch our shows,’ Nelson says. But, ‘as the weeks went by without a TV in our home, my sister and I started noticing how offensive our Thursday night programs were. Since we weren’t exposed to it on a daily basis, we were used to living without the profanity, the immorality, and the scandals. My sister and I argued a lot more on the days we watched TV. About six weeks after moving there, we didn’t want to see the shows anymore. We were happier living without them.’”

Next they provided
20 Ways to Unplug From TV
(From LDS Living)

1. Make rules for watching times. For instance, allow only one hour a day or one day a week, excluding weekends, that kids can watch a program or a movie, and they all have to decide what to watch together. Or, simply do not allow television unless homework and chores have been completed for the day.

2. Designate certain days when no TV is allowed. Sunday is a great time to cut out the TV and focus on things learned at church or read in the scriptures. Get children involved by having them list what they learned and then have them give a mini-lesson before bed.

3. Break out the board games. Games are a great way to have fun with friends and family. Some popular games include Apples to Apples, Mad Gab, Life, Monopoly, Scrabble, Phase 10, Taboo, Boggle, and Scattergories. You can easily spend hours laughing and interacting with friends.

4. Plan weekend activities to fill up time. Don’t get stuck at home on a Saturday just watching reruns of your favorite sports games. By planning activities, you decrease the risk of defaulting to the TV. Look for projects you could do around the house, set up a day out for a family hike, start a gardening project, or visit a museum or park.

5. Give yourself and your family a “time exchange.” For every half hour you or your kids spend watching TV, spend an hour outside doing some sort of physical activity or reading a book. This is a great way to keep you or your children fit and mentally engaged.

Have any of you accepted the challenge of joining in on my 40 day Media Fast? If so how is it going?
Are you thinking of starting your own media fast?

I should do things on the Sabbath that will help me stay close to Heavenly Father: Weeks 3 & 4 Sharing Time Ideas for August 2012

Sharing Time Ideas from the 2012 Primary Outline
IDENTIFY THE DOCTRINE (memorizing a scripture): Tell the children you will give them some clues to discover an important message.  Write the first letter of each word in Exodus 20:8 on the board (R T S D T K I H).  Explain that the letters are the first letters of each word in the message.  Give the next clue by showing a picture of Moses and the Ten Commandments.  Then invite the children to look up Exodus 20:8 and read it together.  Let the children discover the connection between the letters on the board and the scripture.  Help the children memorize the scripture by pointing to the letters on the board as they repeat the scripture several times.

ENCOURAGE UNDERSTANDING (discussing and coloring): Divide the children into four groups.  Assign each group a paragraph from the "Sabbath Day Observance" section of For the Strength of Youth to read. Ask them to discuss the paragraph in their groups and then share what they learned with the other children.  Give each child a piece of paper, and invite them to draw some good things to do on the Sabbath.  Ask a few children to share their drawings with the rest of the Primary.  Encourage them to share what they learned with their families at home.

ENCOURAE UNDERSTANDING (doing a scripture activity): Before Primary, prepare a basket filled with pieces of paper representing manna to use during this activity.  Write the following questions on the board:
- What food did the Lord provide for the Israelites in the wilderness?
- How much were they to gather each day?
- What were they to do on the sixth day?
- What was different on the Sabbath?

Have the children listen for the answers as you tell the story of the Israelites gathering manna (see Exodus 16:11-31).  Ask them to stand when they hear the answer to one of the questions.  Let one child retell the part of the story that answers the question.  Then continue with the rest of the story.  When you are finished, talk with the children about why the Lord didn't want the Israelites to gather manna on the Sabbath.  Have the children close their eyes and pretend to be asleep.  Quickly spread the "manna" around the room.  Ask the children to open their eyes and gather their share of manna (one or two pieces).  Ask the children to place the manna back into the basket.  As each child does so, ask him or her to share an appropriate way to keep the Sabbath Day Holy.

Sharing Time Ideas from Little LDS Ideas

Today I have a fun Sharing Time for all of you. The original idea came from Sugardoodle. I’ve changed a few things here and there, but I cannot take credit for this great idea. Here it is:

Sunday Sundae
For this Sharing Time you are going to be making a ‘Sunday Sundae.’ You will begin with a big bowl of ice cream. Beside the bowl will be several different toppings. The toppings represent activities that are appropriate to do on Sunday.
You will ask the children to share activities that they think are appropriate for Sunday. As they share their ideas you will add the toppings.
After all your toppings have been added you will talk about things that we shouldn’t do.
“What if we forgot to buy something at the store that we need for dinner. So, after church you just run in the store really fast and buy the item.”
Then you will add some coins to your Sundae.
You will say a few other things that aren’t appropriate for Sunday and add the topping.

You can then close by sharing a story from ‘The Friend’ about keeping the Sabbath Day Holy.

I have this Sharing Time typed up for you, so just click the link below to view it.

Some Other Ideas:
If you don’t want to do the ‘Sunday Sundae’ here is another idea:

Sabbath Day Charades: Have several different Sunday activities written/typed onto pieces of paper (read scriptures, visit the sick, etc.).
Invite a child to come to the front and pick a piece of paper. Have them read the activity and then act it out without saying anything. The first person to guess what it is gets to ‘Charade’ next.

Different ways to play Sabbath Charades:
-Give them a choice to Charade, Draw, or Mold (with clay).
-Ask the children for Sunday activities, and as they share their ideas write them on slips of paper. Then use their ideas as the ‘Charades’.

One More Idea:
Sabbath Day Jars: I thought it might be kind of fun to have the children make their very own Sabbath Day jars.
A Sabbath Day jar is filled with appropriate activities for Sunday. Every Sunday the child can pick out activities for him/her to do by themselves or as a family. Here are a few examples:
·        Visit a neighbor.
·        Read and act out a parable or other story from the scriptures.
·        Go for a walk.
·        Write a letter to a missionary or someone you know.
·        Call your grandma and grandpa to say how much you love them.
·        Read one or more chapters from the scriptures.
·        Make a puzzle from a picture in a magazine everyone in the family has read.
·        Count or write down all the beautiful things you can see or think of that our Heavenly Father has given to us.
·        Ask your mother, father, or grandparents to tell you about their lives when they were children.
·        Using a brown paper bag, make a puppet of a biblical character.
·        Draw a picture of three of your blessings.
·        Do a secret good deed for someone.
·        Memorize the words to a favorite hymn or poem.
·        Read a story from the Friend.
·        Ask your mother if you may invite a friend for lunch or supper.
·        Learn about your ancestors and fill out a genealogy sheet.
·        Read a book.
·        Play a game.
·        Read and discuss a conference talk.

And that's it. I hope all of you have a wonderful week and a great Sharing Time!

JUNIEblake: Trendy Modest Clothing for Women {Giveaway}

***This giveaway is now closed. But don’t worry! Just head on over to JUNIEblake to buy some of your very own ‘trendy modest clothing’ from their site. Thanks!

I am so excited to be teaming up with JUNIEblake today for a great giveaway!
Have you heard of JUNIEblake?
JUNIEblake is a modest and TRENDY store. Just because it’s modest doesn’t mean it has to look frumpy. Style is totally in and JUNIEblake has you covered.

JUNIEblake started after a Mother and 2 daughters had a hard time finding modest clothes for their boutique, Sorella Elite Fashion, in Safford, AZ. So they took matters into their own hands and decided to create their own clothing line. The clothing line they created is JUNIEblake.
Lynn Lewis, Rachel Peck, and Emma McBride are the 3 women behind JUNIEblake.

Here’s a little {peek} of a few items from JUNIEblake.

I would love to have this hanging in my closet right now. I am in love with the long Maxi dresses this year, but most of them are sleeveless or spaghetti strap.

The Kasey dress is modest, so no cover-up, tank-tops, or layers are needed.

Another item I am in love with is the Kelly Skirt.

Not only is this skirt so beautiful, but it’s modest. There’s no slit in the back, so you don’t have to worry about showing too much as you walk around (just being honest here).
A simple two inch black elastic band completes the skirt. No zipper or buttons, love that!

I’ll share one last piece: the Bren

I love this top!
This is the white one, but it's also available in Hint of Mint & Indian Tan.
Choices...choices! One of each please!

The great thing about JUNIEblake’s clothing is that you don’t need to wear any layers, cover-ups, or tank tops underneath. That is great, especially during hot summer months.

Did you see anything that you liked? Would you like some JUNIEblake clothing in your closet?

Then listen up!

Today JUNIEblake is offering two (2) Little LDS Ideas readers a $30 gift card to JUNIEblake.

Just enter for your chance to win below. This giveaway will be for one week, ending at 12:00 am (EST) August 14th.
Our two lucky winners will be announced August 15th.

And one thing I forgot to mention...this giveaway is open to anyone! So if you live in Canada, no problem; Mexico, yep; ANYONE!
YEAH!

40 Day Media Fast

Last Monday my family, and other members of our ward, began a 40 day media fast.

So, what is a media fast? Well, it is exactly what it sounds like....40 days with no Television, radio, internet, or video games.

My hubby is the Young Men’s president and a few months ago he had the idea of having a media fast. At first he thought maybe a couple weeks, but then one morning while studying his scriptures he read about Christ fasting for 40 days. As he read and pondered he decided that that is how long the media fast should be.

Sunday we had a fireside to begin the fast. It was a great Fireside.
The first speaker compared our media with mushrooms. She used a talk by Elder Spencer Condie titled, “Mushrooms, Music, Movies, & Magazines”

“There are hundreds of species of mushrooms, and many of them are not only edible but delicious. Mushroom hunting is a favorite family activity in many parts of the world, but mushroom hunters must be aware that between 70 and 80 varieties of mushrooms are poisonous. Some of them are fatal.”

Elder Condie continues by discussing different species of various mushrooms. He talks about the meadow mushroom which is the type that we will find in our grocery stores. Then he discusses two different poisonous mushrooms and the effect they have if eaten. He then compares the mushrooms to the media in today’s world.

Music, movies, and magazines have a lot in common with mushrooms. For example, they come in countless varieties. Just as some mushrooms are edible and desirable and nutritious, certain kinds of music, movies, and magazines provide nutrition for the soul as they edify, entertain, and uplift.
And just as there are different kinds of poisonous mushrooms, so are there different kinds of music, movies, and magazines that poison the spirits of men and women. Some of these poisons are very much like jack-o’-lantern mushrooms because their impact is so repulsive and objectionable that we immediately reject them.
But there are other kinds of music, movies, and magazines that work very much like the “destroying angel”; that is, at first we have no idea that what we are listening to or watching or reading is slowly and surely poisoning our very souls.
Often we hear people comment on different entertainments, and we will hear something like, “This tape by the Dirty Gym Sox has ten good songs and only two bad ones.” Or, “It was a great movie (or video), with only two or three bad scenes.” Or, “Most of the articles in this magazine are very interesting and insightful.
But in 1988, only a few toxic mushrooms in a whole dishful put five Oregon people in the hospital on the verge of death."

Are we on the verge of death...spiritually? Have we been eating too many ‘bad’ mushrooms?

My husband spoke next and explained why 40 days. Why not 2 weeks, a week, or a few days?
In the scriptures we read of many people fasting. And there are many of those that fasted for 40 days.

First we’ll talk about when it rained for 40 days and 40 nights. After it had rained the earth was cleansed.
Then we read of Moses. He fasted for 40 days, and after that received the 10 commandments. He came to know God’s will for him.
Then we read of Elijah who fasted for 40 days and nights.
We read in 1 Kings 19:11-12:
And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
Elijah had fasted and after, he recognized the Spirit.
Last we hear of when Christ fasted for 40 days and after he fasted he began His ministry. He was building a spiritual foundation to go and preach.

After my husband talked about each of the scripture stories he compared them to the media fast. He said as we fast he hopes that we all will:
·        Be cleansed
·        Come to know God’s will for us
·        Come to know how the Lord speaks to us
·        And build a spiritual foundation for ourselves.

So far, it has been wonderful. I didn’t think my children could do it. I thought that they would whine and ask to watch T.V. But they have surprised me.
My son has asked me to watch movies, but I told him he would have to watch it on our portable DVD player in his room. He asked my why he couldn’t watch it in the living room, and I said because Dad has asked us not to watch any T.V., so I don’t want to. He then said, “Oh, then I don’t want to either.”
Our family scripture study has changed for the better. Before, our children were distracted by other things and wouldn’t sit still or listen. Scripture study was more stressful than spiritual.
Now this is their only form of entertainment. When we sit down to read the scripture (the illustrated Book Of Mormon), they quickly run over and snuggle up to us. They are quiet as we read. They ask questions, and they get mad when we say it’s time to stop.

Yesterday at church several people shared their experience with the 40 day media fast. Every experience I heard sounded similar to mine. They could see a huge change in the Spirit in their home and family, the kids were fighting less, scriptures were being read, journals written. People are beginning to see the blessings of holding a media fast.

I want to share one last thing with all of you. I’ve been waking up and studying my scriptures. I’m reading in 2 Nephi right now and I have been using the ‘Verse By Verse; The Book of Mormon’ book by D Kelly Ogden & Andrew C Skinner.
I read 2 Nephi 9:50-51. I then turned to the ‘Verse By Verse’ to see what they had said about these two verses. Here is what it said:

Thirsty? Come to the waters of life. Hungry? Feast upon that which perisheth not.
Here is the lesson in spiritual economics, which you can apply to your everyday life: do not spend your money, your labor, or your time for that which has no value, that which cannot satisfy. Examples could be Internet surfing, television watching, video gaming, chatting, blogging, and on and on, including many things that are not evil but could distract from the things that matter most. As John Bytheway wrote, “Satan works more by distraction than confrontation.”
“Let your souls delight in fatness”—that is, the Lord’s kind of fatness. He encourages the righteous to consume “a feast of fat things” (Isaiah 25:6, D&C 58:8), the fat things referring to the good things of the earth and of heaven.”

Are we becoming distracted? I didn’t think we were. We don’t have cable, we don’t listen to the radio....but what we were doing was still distracting us.
I am so excited for this opportunity. Although it will be hard at times, I know it will be a great spiritual experience for me and my family.
I’m hoping, for myself, that I will gain a stronger testimony and work on the more important things that I have been neglecting.
